Working in Frames: Two New Paintings

I am not sure where it was that I heard that you shouldn’t put your paintings into frames, much less build artist frames around your work. In two of my recent paintings, I ditch this self-imposed prohibition and make some frames!

I think that making a handmade frame for a painting is a lot like putting an image on a website. The image has to mean something in relation to the content around it. I have a feeling, though, that I created the frames here simply because I liked the way that they looked. The paintings remind me a little of some yet-to-be-plugged-in web ad ready to display once someone types in the right keyword. Maybe this is a titling strategy? I don’t know.
